ABOUT.
Since 2004, Dex Diego has brought serious urban splendor to San Diego’s music scene. It started with a three-year stint headlining the Thursday "MixLab" sessions at the now-legendary Candelas Lounge. Along the way, he has moved crowds at Hotel Solamar, Rama, Red C Lounge, Searsucker, Luna Lounge, Visions and other nightlife destinations. Collectively, these endeavors have helped highlight a versatile DJ and selector who delivers a collage of rare, unreleased and unexpected sounds that span the most creative and colorful sonic spectrums.
Currently, Dex is in his seventh year as a summer resident DJ at the Groove Brunch, a weekly Sunday pool party at The Pearl Hotel. During this span, he has set a course for an intelligent, sophisticated, and eclectic approach to music and its associated lifestyle trappings. While Dex typically avoids categorization, he effectively tagged his own sound "serious urban splendor." This makes sense, as Dex was born and raised in Philadelphia where music — all kinds of sweet, soulful music — is felt truly, madly and deeply. His mother loved Motown and The Sound of Philadelphia; his father favored Hendrix and Steely Dan; his grandfather collected Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Hugh Masekela, and Sergio Mendes; and his next-door neighbors, the Perez Family, kept Tito Puente and Celia Cruz at peak volume on Saturday nights.
Beyond his Philly days, Dex graduated from The American University in the international whirlwind of Washington, D.C. Both cities ignited his never-ending knack for musical and cultural absorption. They’re where Dex first experienced open-minded audiences and learned to connect the dots among varied musical genres and influences.
And since his musical appreciation was boundless from the beginning, it's no wonder Dex can seamlessly rock a room with intelligent disco, soulful house, Balearic beats, Brazilian grooves, vintage exotica or sexy downtempo soundscapes. As DJs and tastemakers go, he's consistently aligned with all things cool and current, while also respecting the past and imagining the future. This is the Joy of Dex.
